Microsoft releases emergency updates to fix Windows recovery

What’s new: Microsoft has released emergency out-of-band updates to address issues with Windows reset and recovery operations following the August 2025 security updates. The problematic updates include KB5063875, KB5063709, and KB5063877, affecting Windows 10 and older versions of Windows 11. The new updates are KB5066189, KB5066188, and KB5066187.

Who’s affected

Users of Windows 10 (22H2, Enterprise LTSC 2021, IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021, Enterprise LTSC 2019, IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019) and Windows 11 (versions 23H2 and 22H2) may experience failures in reset and recovery operations after installing the August 2025 updates.

What to do

  • If you have not yet deployed the August 2025 updates, apply the out-of-band updates (KB5066189, KB5066188, KB5066187) instead.
  • These updates are available via Windows Update and can also be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
