| Microsoft sues over 'click laundering' fraud |
 |
Microsoft filed a lawsuit this week accusing a Web site of engaging in a new type of click fraud called "click laundering" by getting credit for clicks on ads that were made by botnets or unsuspecting users on a site set up for that purpose.
The lawsuit names RedOrbit, a science news aggregator, as defendant, while a second suit names John Does to cover multiple unknown defendants who allegedly participated in click laundering on Microsoft's AdCenter network, Microsoft said in a statement.
To get around click fraud detection technologies, fraudsters are using so-called "parked" Web sites to launder the ad click traffic through, Richard Boscovich, a senior attorney in Microsoft's Digital Crimes Unit, said in an interview with CNET. |

| Google rolls out encrypted Web search option |
 |
Google began offering an encrypted option for Web searchers on Friday and said it planned to roll it out for all of its services eventually.
People who want to use the more secure search option can type "https://www.google.com" into their browser, scrambling the connection so the words and phrases they search on, and the results that Google displays, will be protected from interception.
The beta service of the secure Web search option begins in the United States on Friday and will be rolled out over the next few days to users around the world, said Murali Viswanathan, a Google search product manager.
Friday's announcement makes Google the first major search engine to offer this privacy-protective feature. AOL, Yahoo, and Microsoft currently do not.
"Some users will want the extra privacy and security this feature will offer," Viswanathan said in an interview with CNET. "But it's not going to be the default option, at this point. There's a lot of work to be done before we get there." |

| Identity theft crisis worsens for ID security CEO |
|
|
Because I still have a Facebook account, I really want to protect my personal information.
So I'm forced to be in a prostrate position while writing this, as you should be in reading it, for this news might trouble your equilibrium.
Do you remember those ads for LifeLock, the company that claims it will protect your personal information so carefully it'll be made useless to nefarious types? You know, the ads where the CEO displays his Social Security number to make his point? That's right--the ones where any random viewer looks at LifeLock's CEO and says: "You're nuts"?
Well, the New Times of Phoenix has taken it upon itself to investigate just how secure LifeLock 's service might really be. And the quest seems, in some strange way, enjoyable--as well as instructive. |

| Symantec to buy VeriSign's security business |

And

|
Symantec on Wednesday said it will buy VeriSign's security business and take a majority stake in VeriSign Japan for about $1.28 billion in cash, in the hopes of becoming a leader in the growing market for authenticating people and servers on the Internet.
Under the agreement, Symantec will acquire VeriSign's identity and authentication business, including the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate, Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), and VeriSign Trust and VeriSign Identity Protection Authentication services.
"The acquisition creates the most trusted brand for protecting information and identities online," Enrique Salem, president and chief executive at Symantec, said during a conference call. The VeriSign check mark has 250 million impressions each day on more than 90,000 Web sites globally, he said. |
