What’s new: Microsoft has identified a known issue affecting Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025, where updates may fail to install via the Windows Update Standalone Installer (WUSA) when sourced from a network share. The error displayed is ERROR_BAD_PATHNAME, particularly when multiple .msu files are present. This issue arises for updates released on or after May 28, 2025 (KB5058499).
Who’s affected
IT admins managing devices running Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 on enterprise networks may encounter this issue. Home devices are less likely to be affected as WUSA is not commonly used for updates in those environments.
What to do
- For managed devices, apply the Known Issue Rollback Group Policy to mitigate the issue.
- As a workaround, save .msu files locally and install updates from that location instead of a network share.
